Words Have Limits..

I started this project with the theme 'Isolation' ....after having a chat with my tutor I realised the word 'Isolation' has limits, it is only a word after all, it cannot fully define the feeling of isolation. Isolation then lead me to themes such as restraining the body, confinement, being trapped, however, again these are all only words...I am now trying to turn these words into Art....what to they look like? Feel like? smell like? Sound like? What colours to they conjure up?What effects do they have on materials? What materials are related to these concepts? I think the epiphany I have had is that words should not restrict my art...not everything I create has to be defined by words.......art should not always have a write up next to it telling the audience what they are experiencing the art should 'speak for itself' ;P

Mono Print and Sketcha

The aim of this part of my course is to experiment with as many different medias and techniques as possible. Using the photographs I took over the weekend i have done some sketches and mono prints in my sketchbook. I am really pleased with the bold mono prints, I like the way some of the ink is blotchy it creates a nightmarish feel to them. The sketches are just what I quickly did last night in bed,they were useful to practice my drawing skills. I like the black and white contrast on both of these pages, it is simple but makes the images stand out.

Restricted

I have been experimenting with ways to restrict the body. My friend and I did a photo shoot using gaffa tape, cling film and hand cuffs to restrict our models. There is an almost haunting feeling to the images. The model on the right of the third image looks although his skull is escaping. I edited these images using photoshop. Overall I am very pleased with the shoot. 

Oil Painting

Soooo....Ive never done Oil Painting before so I thought I would give it a go. The canvas I used is about A0 size. I have only just started the painting but I think it looks quite striking. In hindsight I think it would have been wise to do the skin tones 1st before the features. I am going to attempt to do the skin tones starting off with green and working in other colours....hopefully this technique will be effective :)

Sensory Deprivation

My topic of isolation has lead me to think about sensory deprivation. The stage of my course I am doing at the moment encourages lots of experimentation. I decided to do a photographic piece of somebody with their head wrapped in gaffa tape (no it wasn't stuck directly onto her skin).This constricts sight, smell and hearing. The photo above is one my favourite, I find that when the subjects eyes are covered they become less connected with the outside world and loose a part of their identity. I found this quite disturbing. After the photo shoot in interviewed the subject she said the whole thing was 'somewhat sexual', I suppose sight can cause someone to feel vulnerable and heighten other senses.

Accumulation of Football Shoes

Accumulation of Real Objects Hard and Soft
Just before christmas I visited the Pompidou Centre in Paris where Arman had an exhibiton. I was impressed by his 'Accumulation' works. He takes multiple everyday objects such as football shoes or paint brushes (shown above) and arranges them into a work of art. This challenges the viewer to see the objects in a different context to how they would in an everyday situation.
